HARVEST HIGH SCHOOL

A bit about Harvest …

History of Harvest

Harvest High School is an independent mission school. The school was started in 1993 by the Doulos Trust to serve the previously disadvantaged community. The school now cares for about 200 children from Grade 8 – 12. The average Grade 8 and 9 class has 43 students in each.

Vision

Harvest exists to provide a nurturing environment offering quality education supported by a strong foundation of Christian values in partnership with parents, equipping students to become leaders to serve God, their families, and to positively impact their communities and the world.

Staff

There are currently 14 staff members. The language of instruction is English.

Subjects Offered

Harvest High offers English or isiZulu as Main Languages, and Afrikaans and English as Additional Languages.

  • In Grade 8 and 9 students do all nine learning areas in the GET phase.
  • In Grade 10 and 11 we offer Mathematics Core, Mathematics Literacy, Life Sciences, Tourism, Physical Sciences, Business Studies, Accountancy, Geography and Life Orientation (in line with the FET phase).
  • In Grade 12 we still offer Mathematics, Biology, Travel and Tourism, Physical Science, Business Economics, Accountancy and Geography (for the old Matric certificate).

Student Profile

Harvest High School purposes to challenge each student to achieve his or her utmost potential academically and socially. Quality education at Harvest High School means accepting learners mentally, spiritually, physically and academically as they have been created. It means teaching students at their individual level of understanding and providing instruction at a pace at which they can succeed to their highest potential. We believe that each student has the responsibility to do his / her very best.

Our students come from diverse backgrounds. Some are from wealthy families, but many are from families who struggle to care for them. Some are even responsible for providing for younger siblings. We daily see the struggles so many of them face; not only things like peer-pressure and teenage pregnancy, but deeper social concerns like being AIDS orphans, facing violence at home and on the streets, and the threat of gangsters.

Yet, over the last couple of years they have done well academically, overcoming so many problems. In 2003 and 2004 we obtained a 100% matric pass rate, in 2005 a 98% pass and in 2006 a 100%. We hope that through prayer and much hard work, we will see this trend continuing.

How Sponsorship Works …

The school management team is responsible for selecting students who they feel would benefit from being sponsored. There are various things that they take into account including the student’s family situation, academic progress and personal qualities. Currently we have four students who are receiving a full sponsorship to our school.

Full sponsorship entails paying for the students fees for the entire year. Partial sponsorship consists of helping parents who cannot afford the full amount and so the sponsor pays part of the school fees and either the parent, or another sponsor, pays the other part. The fees can be paid in full or over 11 months.

Sponsors will receive a quarterly update on the progress of the student they are sponsoring. This includes a school report for each term and either a letter from the school informing the sponsor how the student is doing or a letter from the student.

Students who receive any financial assistance have to sign a contract with the school that includes upholding the values of the school, consistently working hard to improve their academic performance and behaving well. In addition, their parents must also sign a contract in which they commit to helping both their child and the school in any way possible. If at any stage the student or parent breaks this contract they understand that they may lose their sponsorship. If at any time you feel that you no longer want to continue sponsoring that student, all you have to do is let us know.
